NEW Porsche 911

NEW Porsche 911

It’s still a 997, so despite a number of subtle external changes – new wheels, larger door mirrors, slightly revised front air intakes, new LED lights etc. – it still looks much like the existing model, but the latest version showcases a number of major mechanical advancements. The 3.6- and 3.8-litre engines now have more efficient Direct Fuel Injection which allows a reduction in both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions but with increased power; up by 20bhp to 345bhp (3.6) and up 30bhp to 385bhp (3.8). The latest generation 911 also comes with the optional, 7-speed ‘Doppelkupplung’ (PDK), or double-clutch gearbox which changes gears 60 percent faster than a conventional auto. With PDK and the Sport Chrono Package Plus (now with launch control) the 3.8 Carrera S can do 0-62 in just 4.3secs with a top speed of over 186mph. Bigger, more sophisticated brakes are standard on all models, while inside there’s now touchscreen technology with optional iPod, USB and bluetooth connectivity. These newest 911s go on sale in July ’08 with prices starting at £63,070.
